Moong Chilla recipe — authentic Maharashtra Indian dish from Masala Spin

Ingredients

  • 1 cup yellow moong dal (split yellow lentils)
  • 1 inch ginger piece
  • 2 green chillies
  • 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
  • Pinch of asafoetida (hing)
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 tbsp chopped coriander
  • Oil for cooking

Instructions

  1. 1Rinse moong dal thoroughly and soak in water for 4-5 hours.
  2. 2Drain the soaked dal completely. Blend it with ginger, green chillies, and cumin seeds, adding minimal water to make a smooth batter.
  3. 3Transfer the batter to a bowl, add asafoetida, turmeric powder, salt, and chopped coriander. Mix well.
  4. 4The batter should be of pouring consistency; adjust with a little water if too thick.
  5. 5Heat a non-stick griddle, lightly grease with oil. Pour a ladleful of batter and spread evenly into a thin circle.
  6. 6Drizzle a little oil around the edges and cook until golden brown and crisp on both sides.
  7. 7Serve hot with green chutney or yogurt.
